What happened with the boys 11-12 relay DQ/NonDQ
The initial call was a running start on the 4th swimmer in the relay
On a relay start, swimmers are allowed to be in motion if they are not the lead off swimmer.
Instead the NVSL specifies the following rule: Swimmers are allowed the same area that a racing block occupies. Approximately 2’ by 2’ box. The box is imaginary, and not marked on the deck. Swimmers may take as many steps as they like in that 2’ racing box on a relay start. They may not exceed that box, if they do it is considered a running start and they would be disqualified.
We challenged the DQ call on the following points. The stroke and turn is supposed to be looking at the strokes. Because of how they are positioned, it is difficult for them to watch for stroke violations and observe the 2’ by 2’ box. Stroke and turns are allowed to call running starts but it should be egregious.
Ultimately, the call was not dual confirmed by the Chief Judge or the Ref. The Ref made the decision to pocket the DQ and it was overturned.
Things we need to work on:
- We are privileged to swim at some incredibly nice facilities this year. Facilities that have multiple pools. (Lee Graham, Chesterbrook, SHBR, Vienna Woods) We can not hop in the other pools to play games during the meet, even if SHBR invites you!
- Never ever go over lane lines at practice, or a meet or ever. If you break one, it is a disaster. We did it multiple times during regular warm up and relay warm up!
Monday - Fox Mill Woods @ Hiddenbrook.
Please sign up by midnight tonight
Herndon Olympics
- Entries due by 5pm 28 June
- For seeding purposes we will be using top times as of today (27 June)
- The meet is on 7 July at Kinston Chase Pool
- Unlike A meets, Herndon Olympics only guarantees two spots per team per event
- The bid-in meeting is Tuesday 30 June - Neal and Marc to let families know if they got a bid-in spot
- Herndon Olympics uses a different birthday rule. Unlike NVSL, they use your birthday as of the day of the meet (7 July) - this only impacts a handful of swimmers (yes Becca Anderson, we mean you)
- This is your last call to update availability - if you haven’t declared, we will assume you are NOT available.
Quote of the day -
I think it was Marcel that said SHBR had stars, Hiddenbrook has depth and that is what won the meet
What the heck situation! No, you may not park your Black Porsche anywhere you feel like it!
-Neal and Marc
